Warks residents urged to go dry in January

A MEASURE of support from Warwickshire organisations will help people “banish the booze” as part of the Dry January challenge.

Warwickshire County Council’s Community Safety team, local treatment service the Recovery Partnership and District and Borough partners have all stepped up to support the initiative.

Social drinkers in Warwickshire will be encouraged to sign up to the challenge – to “banish the booze for a month and make a healthy start to the new year.”

Alcohol Concern, the charity behind Dry January, says people who take on the challenge can hope to lose a few pounds in weight while saving a few pounds in money; and with no hangovers people will find time and energy they never knew they had.

A county council spokesperson said: “We want to be involved in Dry January this year, as it’s a great idea to get people talking about the issues connected to alcohol.

“We’ll be supporting the campaign with a series of events and open days as well as getting our recovery champions out and about with campaign materials to help spread the word and encourage people to reconsider their drinking habits.”

Warwickshire’s Director of Public Health Dr John Linanne said: “We know that 2,320 people were treated for alcohol and drugs misuse in Warwickshire in 2013/14 and in 2013 there were 1,693 hospital stays for alcohol related harm per 100,000 of the Warwickshire population. So, there are clear reasons for us to get behind the Dry January campaign.

“Once the Christmas and New Year festivities are over, it will be time for many to make a new start, make a change, and make plans for the year ahead. So it’s a great time for us to encourage as many social drinkers as possible to take up the Dry January Challenge.
