Warnings issued over Warks phone scam and fraudulent 'fund-rasiers'

HOUSEHOLDERS across Warwickshire need to remain on their guard against phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), warn Warwickshire Trading Standards.

The bogus callers attempt to frighten residents by claiming police are on the verge of arresting them for unpaid taxes.

The fraudsters then ask the residents to pay the bogus ‘tax bill’ often using iTunes gift card voucher codes.

County community safety spokesman Andy Crump said: “While most people see through these scam calls and put the phone down, unfortunately some vulnerable people can and do fall victim to these frightening phone calls, losing thousands of pounds as a consequence.”

“If you have a vulnerable family member, neighbour or friend, make sure they are aware of this scam and how they can protect themselves.”

ARMED forces charity SSAFA is warning householders to be on their guard against fraudulent fund-raisers.

Bosses have been altered to fraudsters pretending to be volunteers collecting for the charity in Warwickshire, and police have also been made aware.

SSAFA director Justine Baynes said: “All genuine SSAFA volunteers carry an ID card which includes their name and a unique Volunteer ID number. If members of the public are in any doubt, this can be checked by contacting the local SSAFA branch or SSAFA central office.

“We ask that the public remains vigilant. If you are approached and asked for money and something doesn’t seem right, refuse to donate and contact your local SSAFA branch or the police on 101 immediately.”

SSAFA has been providing support to serving men and women, veterans and their families for more than 130 years.
