Warwickshire children's charity given Royal approval

ROYAL recognition has been given to a Warwickshire project which supports vulnerable children.

Older volunteer ‘friends’ from The Friendship Project take six to 16-year-olds who are disadvantaged by family circumstances out for a few hours a week.

The charity says its work – which includes everything from trips to the cinema to walking and baking – shows them someone cares.

And the charity has been recognised after receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Representatives from the project attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace to collect their award.

Friendship Project chair Cheryll Rawbone said: “We are delighted to have the hard work, time and commitment our ‘older friends’ and trustees recognised by such a prestigious award.

“Since the charity started in 1986 we have been able to make a positive difference to more than 1,000 children in Warwickshire. We are actively seeking more volunteers to become ‘older friends’ to enable us to continue our work and to support many more children.”
