Warwickshire secures wheely big world record

WARWICKSHIRE now holds a wheely big world record.

Pupils and staff at Kenilworth School were joined by staff from Warwickshire County Council to create the ‘Largest Human Image of a Bicycle’ ever seen.

The Guinness World Records attempt at Kenilworth School was organised by the county council to celebrate the return of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour to tWarwickshire for a second successive year on Friday June 9.

A total of 1,148 people took a painstaking hour to ensure they had created the bicycle without any breaks in the links under the watchful eye of the Guinness World Records adjudicator.

They eclipsed the current record of 891 people, set by the community of Silloth-on-Solway, Cumbria, during the Tour of Britain in 2015.

A previous attempt at Warwick Castle last year failed when gaps in the wheels were deemed too big.

Warwickshire County Council’s joint managing director, Monica Fogarty, said: “This was a fantastic achievement for Warwickshire County Council and everyone at Kenilworth School. This has set the tone for a warm Warwickshire welcome to the OVO Energy women’s Tour. We’re all set.”

Hayden Abbott, head teacher of Kenilworth School, said: “I feel delighted for the students and for everyone involved that we’ve achieved a world record. It’s a great sense of bonding and cohesion. It feels really good and a great way to end the half term.

Lucia Sinigagliesi of the Guinness World Records, said: “The world’s biggest human image of a bicycle consists now of 1,148 people and it looked amazing … officially amazing!”

The event was part of the county council’s efforts to encourage youngsters to enjoy cycling.

The Guinness World Record attempt could not have happened without the support of Kenilworth School Arden Construction, HeliAir based in Wellesbourne, Kenilworth Town Council and Everyone Active.
