What's on: 'Bonkers' comedy based on wives of Henry VIII coming to Rugby Theatre

A ‘BONKERS’ comedy based on the ill-fated wives of Henry VIII is coming to Rugby Theatre next week.

Six Dead Queens and an Inflatable Henry blends history, comedy and cabaret in a tale of three Catherines, two Annes and one Jane.

Betrayed, beheaded, barren, bemused, broken and bored, the royal wives are trapped together in eternity and forced to share one husband, and one bed, upon which they sing, dance and fight to assert themselves as the one true queen.

The queens shine a comedic light on the dark reign of Henry VIII as enemies are transformed into comrades, and the women band together to raise a raucous royal coup against their spouse.

The show’s director David Allen said: “The title says it all – six dead queens competing to decide who was the best queen.

“The amazing cast have workshopped this piece to create a mad, fun-filled show which I hope audiences will embrace, as Rugby Theatre has never done a show quite like this before.

“We are thrilled to have been in contact with the play’s creators, Foursight Theatre, who have approved adjustments and updates we have made to the script, and there are contemporary references throughout.

“The show is funny, dramatic, moving and in some cases completely bonkers,” he continues. “And yes – Henry will make an appearance!”

Six Dead Queens and an Inflatable Henry – which contains themes of an adult nature – opens on Tuesday (March 17) and runs until Saturday (March 21).
