Will Ferrell as Elf spreads Christmas spirit far and wide

CHRISTMAS isn’t Christmas without two things; eating too much chocolate and watching Elf – preferably at the same time.

It’s not often I can sit through a film more than once, but the heart-warming innocence of Buddy the Elf making his way through a big, bad New York makes this Christmas comedy so watchable.

The festive season for me starts off with a movie night with friends, watching The Muppet Christmas Carol and Elf back-to-back.

Then a week or so later (we are always late to put up the tree) we pull the decorations out of the loft and stick my favourite festive film on in the background.

Since the movie – starring comedian Will Ferrell – was released in 2003, this has become something of a tradition in my house.

Buddy lives in the North Pole after stowing away in Santa’s sack when he was a baby.

One day, upon discovering he is not an elf and is in fact a human, 30-year-old Buddy sets off to New York to find his biological father, guided by only a snowglobe and spreading Christmas cheer as he goes.

But dad’s on the naughty list, and after moving in with his new family, Buddy tries to impress by cooking a breakfast of spaghetti and maple syrup and buying his cynical dad lingerie ‘For Someone Special’.

But Buddy has an even bigger problem after he discovers Santa’s sleigh broke down on Christmas Eve with a flat Clausometer because no one believes anymore.

A Christmas sing-along ensues, and Buddy’s dad of course sings the loudest of all after finding his Christmas spirit.

The festive cheer makes the sleigh roar back to life and Santa is able to deliver presents to the girls and boys.

It doesn’t matter if you are five or 50, Elf is a film which the whole family can sit down and enjoy, watching bumbling Buddy make his way in the world.

Buddy’s tale of unwavering faith, trust and love is a sweet reminder of Christmastime as a child. For me it represents spending time with those I love, laughing and enjoying my favourite time of year.
