Work begins on RSC's temporary outdoor theatre

Rugby Editorial 1st Jun, 2021   0

WORK is underway on the RSC’s temporary outdoor theatre.

The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Garden Theatre will be situation in the Swan Theatre gardens and is set to provide space for the company until it opens in autumn.

The open air theatre will stage its first performance, reconceived version of Phillip Breen’s The Comedy of Errors, from July 13 (Tuesday).

Artistic director Gregory Doran took part in the ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate the creation of the new site.

Work will see the Swan Gardens closed and the Riverside Walk pathway resurfaced.

A 900 tonne base will be laid for the new theatre and 100metres of paths put down, ahead of the main build which starts on June 21 (Monday).

A RSC spokeswoman said: “As news of the roadmap was published, we decided an outdoor theatre space would be an excellent performance venue for us to re-open in the most appropriate and safe way for our audiences.

“We are making every effort to ensure there is very little disruption to the local area during construction.”
