X Factor winner to start Rugby's countdown to Christmas

AN X FACTOR champion will light up the town when Rugby flicks the switch on its festive illuminations next month.

Matt Terry will turn on the Christmas lights in Rugby town centre on Sunday November 18.

He will take to the stage to perform his hits – including When Christmas Comes Around, Subeme La Radio and Sucker for You – at the town centre event.

Since winning the X Factor in 2016, Matt has scored a top three hit, recorded music all over the world including Miami, LA, Scandinavia and Spain, fronted his own radio show for Capital FM, and starred in Madagascar The Musical.

Matt said: “I always get the warmest of welcomes whenever I get to perform in the Midlands, so I’m very excited about meeting my fans in Rugby.

“There’s something very special about Christmas and I’m ready to kick off the festival season in style on November 18.”

The switch-on event, organised by Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council, will also feature Santa’s Grotto, children’s entertainment and a firework display.

More attractions than previous years are promised, including a funfair in the North Street car park which will be open on the Saturday (November 17) from 12-9pm as well as on the Sunday.

Rugby First managing director Aftab Gaffar said: “This year we have spread the event across other areas of the town centre, which will mean a better overall experience for visitors but also benefit businesses in those new areas.

“The annual event is always very well-attended, and generates significant trade for town centre businesses.

“We are really excited to have Matt perform and switch on the lights this year. I think Matt’s appearance along with the other attractions will provide some great family entertainment and draw large crowds – which can only be good news for the town centre economy.”

The switch-on event takes place between 12noon and 5pm on Sunday November 18. Visit www.therugbytown.co.uk for more information.
