Youth club says 'cheers' to supermarket for donation of glassware

A 100-YEAR-OLD youth club has raised a glass to a supermarket in response to a kind gesture.

Members of the Bradby Club said ‘cheers’ to Tesco – itself celebrating its centenary this year – for donating nearly 150 pieces of glassware for the club to use at functions and fund-raising events.

The supermarket regularly used to hire out glasses to the club until it stopped the service.

But ‘as one centenarian to another’, the club requested a donation of glassware to which Tesco agreed – saving the club time and money in the process.

The glasses – a selection of flutes, wine glasses, tumblers and pint glasses – will get their first official airing at the club’s AGM on Wednesday June 12.

Club trustee Alison Ross said: “The trustees and staff are thrilled with this wonderful gift.

“I approached Tesco on the basis that they were 100 years old and so was Bradby, and I felt that this might give us a common link.

“We are all incredibly grateful to Tesco for agreeing to help celebrate our centenary in this way and wish them well for their next 100 years – and hope that ours will be equally successful.”

The donation will save the club vital funds during its ongoing appeal to fix structural defects at its dilapidated headquarters.

Years of neglect and a rise in vandalism at the East Union Street venue have left the club facing closure unless it can raise £15,000 for repairs.
