Adams focusing on the future

Rugby Editorial 5th May, 2020   0

RUGBY Town boss Carl Adams is already looking ahead to the next United Counties League Premier campaign following the FA’s confirmation the 2019/20 one would cease and be declared null and void.

The game’s ruling body rejected an appeal supported by ultimately more than 100 grassroots clubs asking for a reconsideration of the annulment, which included a plea for a tangible method of deciding promotion and relegation issues to be used instead.

Last month’s initial announcement had seen Adams express his preference that the authorities try and find a way to somehow complete the season, whilst he had also acknowledged the uncertain times the country finds itself in due to the coronavirus pandemic would have made this a difficult task.

On the subject of an alternative solution to voiding, he had stated: “I don’t think there is a fair way of achieving this, as whatever option you choose there will be clubs that are unhappy with the outcome.”

With the FA’s final ratification process now complete, Adams preferred to focus on the task of re-securing Rugby’s status in the next step of the non-League pyramid at the earliest possible opportunity.

Valley’s boss explained: “As I said at the time, of course it’s frustrating not to be able to finish off the job as I believed we were more than capable of doing so this season, but we will just have to pick ourselves up and go for it again next time around.

“We were on a great run ahead of the suspension of fixtures. We had won 12 of the previous 14 games and were clearly the form team of the division.”

Adams added: “I’m now massively looking forward to starting all over again, whenever that might turn out to be.

“I’ve really warmed to the club in my two years here and I’m desperate to get us promoted. The ground and the town deserve a higher level of football and I will be doing all I can to bring this about.”

The curtailed campaign was Adams’ second in charge at Butlin Road, with the to-be-expunged third-placed ranking this time around following the same finish at the end of the 2018/19 term.

He concluded: “I am going to try my hardest to keep the bulk of this squad together. It would be foolish to change things too much considering how well we have done over the past few months, but obviously I’m always looking to strengthen if players I think are better options come up too.”
