BADMINTON - Britannic Assurance tournament returns after three-year absence

Rugby Editorial 6th Dec, 2022   0

THE Rugby and District Badminton Association held their Britannic Assurance tournament at Rugby School Sports Centre for the first time since September 2019 at the end of last month.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought a halt to badminton leagues across the country for a short period as the rules were laid down by Badminton England.

However, the Rugby and District Badminton Association were finally able to welcome some 64 players from the town and surrounding towns and villages to their Britannic Assurance tournament for the first time in more than three years.

The event featured two groups of eight teams in a round robin format where each of the players had to cope with 14 games of badminton throughout the day, starting at 10am and finishing at around 6pm.

Several Rugby Badminton League players took part in the group matches and were well supported by social players with the scoring system subject to a handicapping format to give everyone a chance of winning their group.

And Trinity won Group A by a margin of just 25 points ahead of Hinckley from a combined team total of 588 whilst St Philips Badminton Club, from Rugby, topped Group B by a 25-point margin after seven difficult matches.

The event was ably supported by the league’s ‘stringer’ who was kept busy restringing rackets right up until close of play.

The Rugby and District Badminton Association would be pleased to hear from anyone who may be keen to further their experience in the sport.

And they also offer coaching to juniors and adults who want to start playing or improve their current game and promote both junior and senior badminton within the Rugby, Daventry, Lutterworth and Hinckley areas.
