FOOTBALL: RUGBY Borough continued their strong pre-season form on Monday night with a confidence boosting 8-0 win over Brixworth All Saints from the Northamptonshire Combination league.
Borough signalled their intent early on when Remae James helped borough take the lead after just six minutes following a goalkeeping error.
The town’s newest senior side enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening part of the game, and they soon doubled their lead on 14 minutes when Tommy Berwick was brought down in the box.
Berwick calmly slotted the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.
A third goal was added on 25 minutes when Gerard McGahey volleyed home an inswinging cross from Nick Witham.
With the defence rarely troubled, Borough set about their fourth goal – and it came on 40 minutes when the impressive Kane Finney scored from Tommy Berwick’s pass.
The second half started like the first, with the Borough boys on top and Adam Shaw going close on a couple of occasions.
A few changes in personnel didn’t stop the flow of the game with Jay Finley and Jake Martin slotting in the back four and looking very comfortable.
Rugby’s lead was extended further with a good goal from youngster Will Hancock.
Gerard McGahey blazed a free kick over, but soon made amends by drilling home to score the sixth goal.
The strong crowd didn’t have to wait long for goals seven and eight as Nick Witham and Jack Blackman rounded off the scoring.
Borough now look forward to starting their league campaign on August 19 at Kilsby Lane when they host Barrow Town Reserves.
