Borough win the battle at the top to go four clear

Rugby Editorial 12th Mar, 2019   0

RUGBY Borough claimed a crucial victory in their hunt for the Leicestershire Senior Premier Division title with a 2-1 win away to challengers Saffron Dynamo.

Borough made the trip to Cosby in Leicestershire with just a point separating the two in what was a must-win for both side’s title aspirations.

Saffron seized the upper-hand and immediately put Rugby under pressure, having several attempts at goal, though the Borough defence stood firm.

Their continued pressure paid dividends, and on 28 minutes, the hosts were ahead through Ben Tye.

Borough to their credit responded brightly, but nothing of note fell their way before the break.

They emerged the stronger side in the second-half and set out their stall to dominate from the start – equalising five minutes in through Michael Ellis.

It provided Borough with a basis to go and chase the winner with the majority of the half still to play, but it did not appear to be going their way.

Up stepped substitute Josh Turton, who sent a close-range header into the net which could prove the difference come the season end.

Luke Pritchard went close with a free-kick that crashed onto the bar and out, but Rugby held firm for the all-important three points.

The win gives Borough a four-point cushion at the top of the division with six games left to play, heading to 12th placed Ellistown on Saturday (3pm).
