Cossar on form to land opening British Sidecar Speedway round

SIDECAR SPEEDWAY: A GUTSY ride from Mark Cossar ensured he won the opening round of the British Sidecar Speedway Championships at Leicester on Saturday night.

In front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, the Rugby-based rider battled from third to first to win the first round of the national series on a night which produced some exciting racing with countless overtaking manoeuvres taking place throughout the night.

Teaming up with Leicester-born passenger Carl Blyth, the pair overcame Nottingham’s Paul Whitelam and Terry Saunters in the final.

Cossar just managed to hold off Whitelam on his way to four heat victories, and had to use every inch of his track-craft and bravery to find a way past in the grand final.

Younger brother Tom had a frustrating night with two race exclusions on his way to three points while father Andy Cossar used his experience to register five points, despite one exclusion.

Rugby’s Gareth Williams proved an excellent passenger to Birmingham’s Matt Fumarola – scoring six points – as they just missed out on a semi-final place.

The second of the four-leg British Championship takes place at Somerset Speedway’s Oak Tree Arena near Highbridge on Friday (June 9).
