WARWICKSHIRE CCC played out a high-scoring draw with defending champions Surrey to continue their strong start to the County Championship season.

The Bears declared on 665-5 in their first and only innings as Tom Latham (184) marked his Warwickshire debut with a superb century at Edgbaston.

Latham’s knock saw him produce the highest score by any Bears player on debut in the club’s history.

And Ed Barnard (177 not out) and Zen Malik (105 not out) also scored centuries as the Bears punished the Surrey attack.

In reply, Warwickshire bowled Surrey out for 504 – enforcing the follow-on – as Ben Foakes (174 not out) frustrated the Warwickshire bowlers.

Surrey reached 15-0 in their second innings before a downpour arrived to wash out the final session.

The result means the Bears sit second in the Division One table with the Edgbaston club yet to taste defeat this season.

Head coach, Ian Westwood said: “We played outstandingly well, to post such a big score and turn up on the last day with a hope and a chance of winning was exciting.

“We bowled with a lot of heart and skill, it was a good performance all round.

“It looked a good batting pitch and it was great batting performance.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of the way we played and the effort we put in.

“This group is growing in belief, we’ve played some solid cricket, we’re not the finished article yet.”

Warwickshire are next in action against Hampshire on Friday, May 16 with the game to start at 11am at Edgbaston.
