MARK Robinson felt Warwickshire ‘pushed until the end’ following a strong performance in a County Championship draw with Durham.

Warwickshire posted a huge 698-3 before declaring in their first innings before forcing Durham to follow-on after bowling out their opponents for 517.

However, the visitors dug in at Edgbaston to reach 293-6 in their second innings with the Bears just unable to take the remaining four wickets.

Robinson said: “We’ve had a good four days, you’re disappointed because you haven’t won but we worked hard right until we took that last new ball.

“We pushed to the end but it wasn’t to be, it was a slow wicket but once the seam goes on the Kookaburra ball you lose the bite and everything else and you’ve got to give credit to Durham, they showed some good rearguard action.

“We know we’ve not quite had the rub of the green and on another day you’ll get a lot more reward than we have in this match.

“The confidence will come from bowlers putting the ball in the right place and the batters have exploited some great conditions.”

Warwickshire scored close to 500 runs on the opening day of play as Alex Davies starred with a stunning knock of 256 while fellow opener Rob Yates (191) helped put on 343 runs for the first wicket.

And Will Rhodes (178 not out) and Dan Mousley (55 not out) also showed form with the bat as Warwickshire produced the second-highest total in their history.

However, Durham responded well as opener Alex Lees (145) showed excellent resistance while Ben Raine (93), Graham Clark (76) and Ollie Robinson (60) all chipped in with useful knocks.

With the ball, Rob Yates (4-137) impressed as a host of other bowlers took a wicket apiece.

The Bears reduced Durham to 10-2 at the start of their second innings before nightwatchman Matthew Potts (149 not out) helped the visitors battle to a draw.

Warwickshire are next in action away at Hampshire from Friday, April 19 to 22 at the Utilita Bowl.
