WARWICKSHIRE CCC suffered an 89-run defeat against Hampshire to lose in the County Championship for the first time this season.

After Hampshire posted 300 in their first innings, the Bears could only mange 194 all out in reply at Edgbaston.

The visitors finished on 203 all out in their second innings which left Warwickshire needing more than 300 runs for victory.

And the Bears fell 89 runs short of the required total as Hampshire’s James Fuller (5-56) claimed a five-for.

The result means Warwickshire sit third in the Division One table after slipping to their first defeat of the season.

Hampshire won the toss and elected to bat as opener Mark Stoneman (48) fell just short of a half-century.

The away side’s middle order swung the game in Hampshire’s favour as Liam Dawson (46) and James Fuller (52 not out) pushed the visitors to a 300-run mark.

Ed Barnard (4-56) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby (3-47) impressed with the ball while Beau Webster (2-42) chipped in with a couple of wickets.

Warwickshire slipped to 30-4 in their reply with only Alex Davies (16) reaching double figures in the Bears top order.

However, Webster (41) and Barnard (58) combined to boost Warwickshire’s total although Kyle Abbott (5-47) ensured Hampshire took a 106-run lead into their second innings.

Hampshire opener Fletcha Middleton (76) top scored in reply while Toby Albert (43) and Abbott (25 not out) added useful runs.

The Bears had the visitors in trouble on 99-5 only for Middleton and Albert to frustrate the Warwickshire attack.

Webster (4-57) and Ethan Bamber (4-60) starred with the ball but the Bears needed 310 runs for victory.

However, Warwickshire made a disastrous start to their second innings with Rob Yates (2) bowled in the first over before Tom Latham (0) fell for a duck.

Davies (66) kept the Bears innings ticking along while Sam Hain (30) and Bamber (43) added useful runs.

But the Bears could not form a strong enough partnership throughout the innings as the hosts slipped to an 89-run defeat.

Warwickshire are next in action against Worcestershire on Friday, May 23 with the game to start at 11am at New Road.
