HOCKEY: RUGBY and East Warwickshire Hockey Club Men’s Over 40s side were knocked out of the Men’s Over 40s Cup against Exeter’s Isca Hockey Club on Saturday afternoon.

The O40s run came to an end after the home side established an early lead before Rugby equalised following a Russell Watling short corner.

A further goal for Isca led to two further goals, forcing Rugby to chase the game.

The home side denied Rugby any access on the goal in the closing stages of the game, subsequently knocking the O40s out of the tournament.

Elsewhere there was better luck for Rugby and East Warwickshire 1st XI who defeated Edgbaston to remain top of the league and put themselves in a commanding position.

Rugby had to come from behind though as Edgbaston took the lead through a well worked goal following a lapse in concentration from the home side’s defensive unit.

A second goal doubled Edgbaston’s lead, though Szymon Oszyjczyk scored a drag flick to half the lead.

Rugby then equalised before adding the game-winning goal shortly before time as Chris Graham scored from the left post.

The 1st XI’s win over Edgbaston couldn’t be repeated against Barton on Sunday though as the home side put six past REW in a one-sided affair.

Though a second comeback in as many days was on the cards with REW trailing 2-1 at half time, Barton quickly stamped their authority on the game by scoring three goals in the space of five minutes to lead 5-1.

The Ladies 1st XI battled hard to earn a 2-1 win against rivals Nuneaton on Saturday.

A dream start was made as Emma A scored from a tremendous through ball to hand the girls an early advantage.

Rugby remained strong in defence with lots of offensive pressure from Nuneaton who conceded a second shortly into the second half as skipper Charlie converted.

Rugby just about held onto their lead to earn a hard-fought victory.

Men’s 2nd XI suffered a 3-2 loss to Stourport, though the Men’s 4th XI managed to triumph 4-1 against Lichfield.

A convincing 3-0 occurred for the 5th’s who defeated Warwick Uni while the 6th’s couldn’t take advantage of a short-benched Warwick side, eventually drawing 2-2.

This week the 1st XI travel to Sutton Coldfield for an away league fixture while the 2nd XI play West Bridgford.

The Ladies 1st XI will be in action against Stratford at Bilton High at 12.30pm.
