FOOTBALL: RUGBY Town Pumas added the Bedworth Nursing Cup to their trophy cabinet by beating league leaders Sphinx on Good Friday.

Playing at the Bedworth Oval in front of a sizeable crowd, Rugby put in a fighting performance against a strong and physical Sphinx side and ran out 3-2 winners following a thrilling match.

The opening period proved to be a tight affair and it was Sphinx were got their noses in front after taking advantage of some poor defending from a cross into the area.

The lead however was short-lived as Rugby got back on level terms when John Patten put Dylan Cordero in on goal and he made no mistake with his shot.

Patten played a key role in the second Rugby goal before half-time when he put Thai Willis through and after being fouled inside the area he brushed himself down to fire Rugby into a narrow 2-1 lead at the break.

Both sides struggled to create chances after the break but when Sphinx started to put pressure on the Rugby defence, they cracked and another hopeful cross left to a goalmouth scramble and Sphinx were able to fire home the rebound.

With just minutes remaining Rugby were awarded a penalty when Leo Rincon-Tivey was hacked down and Patten fired home what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot.

TEAM – (Left to right) Back row – Jed Jankowski, Jack Connor, Charlie Crinigan, Leo Carroll, John Patten.
