Damp weather fails to deter Rugby Triathlon Club

TRIATHLON: THE cold autumn weather failed to put a dampener on Rugby Triathlon Club as athletes competed in a series of events across the region.

Laura McCrystal starred in the Broadway Half Marathon, which took place on a troublesome off-road hilly course on different types of terrain in the heart of the Cotswolds.

With more than 1,700ft of climbing, McCrystal finished in 2:34, a stand out time given the race lacked lengthy periods of tarmac.

The time was even better considering Laura chose to stop halfway and use her physiotherapist knowledge to help strap up the ankle of a fellow competitor.

Sticking to the muddy half marathon theme, Anthony Smith completed the Dirt Half in 1:32 – finishing 40th out of near 1,000 competitors.

This Leighton-Buzzard half marathon proved – like the name suggests – a muddy affair with big hills providing athletes with a significant challenge.

On two-wheels, Richard Mercer and Sarah Booker took part in the Evans Cycles Leicester Road Sportive, starting and finishing at the Mallory Park circuit.

They opted for the intermediate 50-mile route.

The event took in many different sections of Leicestershire, mainly flat but nonetheless scenic.

Finally Jane Mitchell took part in the Mooloolaba Ocean Swim – a 1.25km sea swim in New Zealand.

Hosted in 19C temperatures, Mitchell finished in 26 minutes – dodging the local jellyfish en route.
