BEARS stretched their unbeaten record to nine games thanks to a 50-32 win on the road in Northampton against Phoenix to move one step closer to the National play-offs in May.

In-form Anna Turney was named in the starting line-up after impressing in recent weeks and from the tip the Bears dominated the opening quarter.

The visitors gave their opponents little to go at and took a 18-6 lead into the second period where new signing Dan Gill immediately made an impression on his debut.

Gill provided numerous assists and scored his first competitive basket as the Bears extended their lead further to 30-14 at the half-way stage.

The second half played out the same as the second quarter with the Bears fully in control whilst giving their fringe players some valuable time on the court.

Turney was in fine form again and Sharleen Honey was showing more improvements as the third quarter finished 40-26 to the visitors.

And with the game all bit over Phoenix battled back but the Bears finished the match strongly to finish with an 18-point advantage at the whistle.

“That’s another one in the bag, and one more game closer to the Play-Offs.” said Bears coach Tom Masterson.

“I’m really pleased to see new recruit Dan Gill get his first baskets in a league game and he deserves the MVP award for scoring 12 points in only his first game.

“He is a real prospect for the Bears. Also Anna Turney and Sharleen Honey need a mention on how with every game they are improving and getting on the score sheet.”

The Bears are next in action away to their closest rivals for the title, London Titans, this weekend.
