HOCKEY: RUGBY and East Warwickshire hockey club’s 1st XI will be looking to put the last weekend behind them after a disappointing result against Warwick University.

A poor performance saw them come out on the wrong side of a 7-3 game, despite pushing for equalising goals during the opening parts of the game.

The visiting side stood a chance when the score stood at 4-2, however decisive goals put pay to any opportunity Rugby had of picking up points.

The 1st XI now require seven points from nine available to be promoted.

REW 2nd XI had little to cheer about too as they lost 5-1 to Loughborough Students.

Stand in skipper Chris Harding put in a standout performance from the off and proved a hard-worker at the back.

Rugby finished the first half 3-0 down though, and were quickly 5-0 down after holding the visitors for the first part of the second half.

Chris Harding scored a drag flick in the final five minutes though his goal provided little consolation.

The 3rd XI’s fixture against Loughborough Students while the 4th XI drew against Beeston.

There were wins meanwhile for the 5th XI and 6th XI against West Bridgford and Loughborough Town respectively.

Also registering a win was REWHC Ladies 1st XI, who won 2-1 after coming back from a goal behind in the first half.

Despite winning, the girls only started showing what they’re capable of in the 45th minutes when Sarah Plant stopped two short corner shots on the line – which led to a string of passes which allowed the visiting side to move upfield.

With 15 minutes to go, the girls’ 1st XI equalised as Sarah Naylor scored a well worked goal.

Two short corners in the last two minutes led to a second goal as Nicki scored the winning goal with an excellent strike.

Ladies’ 2nd XI drew 2-2 against Warwick after coming from a goal behind at half time.

Both goals came from penalty corners as Natalee scored on the rebound and Dr Mary added a second with a straight strike.

The Ladies 3rd XI won away at Hampton while REWHC Under 12s beat Olton, Old Sils, Sutton and Atherstone in the opening round of the County Championships.
