Early FA Vase exit for Rugby Town

Rugby Editorial 16th Nov, 2017   0

FOOTBALL: RUGBY Town were knocked out of the FA Vase in a second round replay at Butlin Road after a disappointing defeat to West Midlands (Regional) League leaders Wolves Sporting.

The visitors started brightly and had two excellent chances before they took the lead on seven minutes when Delaney fired in a low free-kick from 20 yards which deflected in via the wall to wrong-foot Niall Cooper.

Trey Brathwaite and David Kolodynski both came close in between an excellent double save by Cooper to deny the visitors before Ruben Wiggins-Thomas saw a glorious chance go begging when he was released one-on-one only to see his shot saved.

Wolves hit Rugby to double their advantage late in the first half when Scragg broke down the middle of the pitch before laying the ball through to Dunkley who poked an early shot cleverly past Cooper.

Rugby rallied in the second half but could not find a goal as Wiggins-Thomas and Tevin Shakespeare both missed golden chances from close range with Wiggins-Thomas also heading against the crossbar.
