Early tries cost Newbold

RUGBY UNION: EARLY tries cost Newbold in their latest league fixture against Sandbach.

In blustery conditions, Newbold forced immediate pressure on their rivals as KJ Henry touch down for an unconverted early try.

Newbold’s normal superiority in the scrums was met with an equal resistance, nullifying the usual advantage.

This proved costly as Sandback quickly registered their first try of the afternoon when Joe Gammage crossed over to level the scores.

The visitors continued to use the wind well with their kicker advancing forward to edge Sandbach into a seven-point lead.

Though Newbold earned good possession following the restart, it was Sandbach that stretched their lead further when a missed tackle allowed Davies to cut back in and score underneath the posts to make it 5-19.

Ethan Wookey struck a penalty for Rugby to reduce the margin to 11 points, but Newbold found themselves further behind when Sam Winstanley crossed over just before half time.

Lloyd Warner setup Facer to score Newbold’s opening try of the second half, reducing Sandbach’s lead to 13 points.

A dropped ball led to Sandbach successfully kicking a penalty before Newbold fought back when Warner scored a converted try.

The visiting side matched this though when a five-yard scrum allowed flanker Liam Carpenter to cross over, handing Sandbach a 36-20 lead.

Despite further chances, neither side added to their total.

Newbold travel to Birmingham and Solihull on Saturday.
