THE SECOND AEI/Rugby Town Festival was a success once again with a host of familiar faces and ex-league players taking to the pitch at Kilsby Lane.
Teams from across Rugby, Coventry and Kettering, as well as neighbouring villages, made up the four groups and the players were met with warm weather for Saturday’s tournament.
Group One proved to be a very even playing field but it was Clean Team who finished top with Stockton coming second. The second group was equally as competitive but it was tournament favourites ASG Sports to edged out as group winners after playing some excellent football.
There were two sides from the Strachan Football Foundation in Group Three but neither could progress out of the group. Sphinx won Group Four, with battle hardened Royal Oak finishing as runner-up.
Tired legs began to show in the semi-finals but Stockton showed they meant business after beating a spirited Royal Oak side 1-0 on the Plate Final.
ASG Sports demonstrated why they were favourties to win by beating Dan’s Dynomoes 3-1 in the other Plate semi-final AEI edges past the Masters by the same scoreline.
In the main competition, Dans Dynomoes played ASG Sports in what was an end-to-end match but once again ASG showed their class in front of goal by winning 3-1.
Clean Team also booked their place in the final thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a tired Coventry Sphinx side.
A late goal decided the Plate Final wih AEI lifting the trophy after beating Stockton, while the other final also proved to be a very tight affair.
Both sides created chances but the game was decided by just the one goal as favourites ASG claimed a narrow victory over Clean Team.
