FOOTBALL: LUTTERWORTH tasted their first league defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 1-0 away to Buckingham Town.
The Swifts went into the game top of the table and were looking to stay there as they travelled to a Buckingham side that had also not lost a game.
Lutterworth started with positive intent going forward, looking to create chances and play good football.
This however was not matched when they did not have the ball.
Failure to close down quick enough and a lack of urgency lead to Buckingham dominating the game.
Buckingham’s midfield had the run of the Swifts and, had it not been for some last ditch tackles, the home side could have gone ahead on several occasions.
Lutterworth’s frustrations hampered their ability to get back into the game.
And sure enough the Swifts almost found themselves a goal behind when a long kick was lifted over Lutterworth keeper Kristian Bee.
Shaquille O’Neal Brooks’ quick thinking managed to keep the ball from crossing the line, but a Justin Peace tackle on the edge of the box saw him sent off and Lutterworth were down to ten men.
It took just five minutes for Lutterworth to take the lead following the red card.
A simple ball over the top lead to the home side’s frontman slotting passed Bee.
The goal seemed to spark Lutterworth into life and the Swifts began to assert a real dominance over the home side.
Substitute Liam Taylor injected some much needed intensity to the Swifts midfield.
The Swifts created several good chances to level but just lacked that final bit of clinical quality to score.
Despite their efforts, the game ended 1-0 as Buckingham held onto their lead.
The Swifts are next in action on the road against Friar Lane on Saturday, September 9.
