FOOTBALL - Adams praises Rugby Town's 'desire' after nine-men earn point at Corby

CARL Adams praised his side’s ‘desire’ after Rugby Town earned a heroic point in a 1-1 draw away at Corby Town despite playing more than half the game with nine-men.

After losing Chris Clements and goalkeeper Matt Hill to red cards at the end of the first period, Valley held firm to come away with a point despite striker Jordan Wilson taking the gloves.

The returning Mikey Taylor equalised for Valley after Michael Jacklin’s header put Corby in front and boss Adams felt his side could have won the game without the two dismissals.

Adams said: “It was a tremendous effort from the lads and shows the desire they still have despite where we are in the table right now.

“I’d argue that we had had the better of things ahead of the sending-offs and could have easily gone on to win if we’d kept eleven out there.

“We defended superbly as a unit though and primarily restricted them to pot-shots from distance, and could have even nicked one ourselves towards the end.

“Both reds were harsh in my opinion, but it just underlines how things have gone for us this season.

“I think we’re appealing Chris’s on the grounds it’s not violent conduct, and for Matt’s, it’s clear there was a covering defender.”

Goalkeeper Hill has since departed the club with Tomasz Bukowski set to return to the side this weekend after sitting out the Corby game as part of the transfer agreement from his old club.

Rugby are next in action at home to AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, January 20 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
