FOOTBALL - Rugby Borough Women produce spirited display in defeat against league leaders Knowle

RUGBY BOROUGH WOMEN put in a spirited display to lose 3-1 away at league leaders Knowle Ladies with Michelle Oldfield on target for the visitors.

The result leaves Borough in eighth place in the West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One South table, with just 10 points separating third and ninth.

And Rugby headed into the clash with more injuries and Covid problems which limited them to a squad of 11 on the day.

Knowle took the lead with an early penalty which was neatly converted past Beth Daly in the Rugby goal.

However, having learnt their lesson in the reverse fixture which ended 6-0 back in January, Borough defended well for the remainder of the half.

Tiredness eventually set into Rugby’s play as Knowle added a second goal with a tap in from a couple of yards out.

The visitors searched for a way back into the game but were unable to hit the target before Knowle trebled their lead despite the ball appearing to go out of play in the build up.

However, Rugby did at least finish the game on a high when Oldfield tucked the ball home from Sam Smyth’s free-kick.

Borough are next in action at home to Leamington Lions on Sunday, March 6 with kick-off at 2pm at Kilsby Lane.
