FOOTBALL - Rugby Town boss Adams targets points ahead of crunch clash with rivals Coventry Sphinx

CARL Adams wants his Rugby Town side to take at least four points from their next two matches ahead of a crunch clash with relegation rivals Coventry Sphinx this weekend.

Valley sit two points and one place above the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone following a crucial 2-1 win against Cambridge City in their last outing.

And Rugby boss Adams hopes to drag more teams into the relegation battle ahead of games against rivals Coventry and Coleshill Town in their next couple of fixtures.

Adams said: “It’s a pity we sat out last Saturday as it would’ve been good to have had the opportunity to continue with the momentum, but I guess Coventry are in the same boat as they didn’t play either.

“We’ve got two winnable games coming up, so we’re targeting at least a four-point return from them, and if we achieve that hopefully we’ll have dragged a couple of more teams into the relegation mix too.”

Sphinx sit directly above Valley in the table with Rugby keen to avenge their 2-1 home defeat to the same opponents earlier in the season in which then Town goalkeeper Nykah Liburd-Hines saw red.

That came after Sphinx pipped Rugby to the United Counties League Premier South title last campaign.

Adams added: “There does seem to be a bit of needle in our games, and they seem to be particularly up for it.

“From our perspective though, it’s just another game that we need to get something from and fortunately we’re pretty much at full strength for it.

“For some reason, we seem to have done okay against the better sides and we’ve struggled more against those in the bottom half – but hopefully we can do something to address that this weekend.”

Valley have Ryan Sahota back from suspension while skipper Barry Fitzharris is also available again along with Josh Thomas.

Rugby travel to Sphinx on Saturday, February 17 with kick-off at 3pm at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
