FOOTBALL - Rugby Town dig deep to edge out Cogenhoe United

Rugby Editorial 25th Jan, 2022   0

MAX JOHNSON came off the bench to secure a narrow 1-0 win for Rugby Town against Cogenhoe United which marked Valley’s ninth win in 10 league matches.

Johnson struck on 54 minutes to end Cogenhoe’s stubborn resistance as Rugby dominated from start to finish at Compton Park.

The win means Rugby sit fourth in the United Counties League Premier Division South table, 11 points behind leaders Hinckley LRFC.

Rugby’s Justin Marsden saw his lob easily saved before David Kolodynski hit the side netting from a tight angle before heading straight at Cogenhoe goalkeeper Craig Foxall.

And Town’s best chance of the half fell to Kolodynski when he headed Caine Elliott’s chipped cross onto the bar shortly before the break.

However, Johnson’s introduction at the interval would pay dividends when he powerfully toe-poked home from Dan Summerfield’s pass.

That goal marked Johnson’s fifth of the campaign and he could have had his sixth soon after when he blazed over a great chance from fellow substitute Adam Shaw’s cross.

And the chances continued to come Johnson’s way when his jinking run ended with a well-struck shot that was saved by Foxall.

The home side had Tom Wakely sin-binned for dissent late on as Rugby saw out the remaining minutes to secure another victory.

Rugby are next in action at home to Coventry United on Saturday, January 29 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
