RUGBY Town secured their first win since the turn of the year with a 3-2 victory against Lichfield City in a five-goal thriller.

Goals from Rivel Mardenborough, Caine Elliott and debutant Kobi Bivens saw Valley end their four-game winless run at Butlin Road.

The result means Rugby sit 16th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, five points above the relegation zone.

Lichfield ended a five-game goal drought on 12 minutes when Callum Griffin headed the ball into his own net under pressure from Joe Haines at a free-kick.

However, Valley equalised seven minutes later as Mardenborough finished from close range after Lichfield blocked Jack Concannon’s goalbound effort on the line following a 20-pass move.

And Rugby completed the turnaround on 31 minutes when Elliott scored from the penalty spot after Geoffrey Lundoloki drew a foul in the box.

Lichfield drew level four minutes into the second half as Harvey Smith found the net on the turn to restore parity.

However, debutant Bivens provided the game’s decisive moment on 56 minutes with a cool dinked finish over Lichfield goalkeeper Brendon Bunn.

Valley twice went close to sealing the points as Bunn kept out Elliott’s free-kick while Sam Tye’s scooped effort almost found the net.

Rugby are next in action against Basford United on Saturday, January 31 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
