RUGBY Town suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat away at promotion hopefuls Anstey Nomads in a blow to Valley’s survival hopes.

Valley were simply no match for their opponents who scored three goals in either half at Cropston Road to inflict a damaging defeat on Carl Adams’ side.

The result means Rugby sit 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, three points above the relegation zone, although both of the teams below Valley have a game in-hand.

Anstey broke the deadlock after just five minutes when Jacob Fenton produced a smart finish from the edge of the penalty area.

And the home side doubled their lead on 17 minutes as Darien Wauchope’s cross evaded everyone, including Valley goalkeeper Paul Hathaway, and crept into the corner.

Nomads extended their lead on 31 minutes when Freddie Robinson found the net from another attack down the left-hand side.

Anstey picked up where they left off after the break as Nyle Blake made it four on 54 minutes following some pinball in the Rugby penalty area.

Robinson scored his second of the game three minutes later after he was afforded time and space in the box to control a cross on his chest before he sent a fine half volley past Hathaway.

And Anstey completed the scoring in the final minute of regulation time when Brad Wilson headed a deep free-kick into the corner.

Rugby are next in action at home to Spalding United on Saturday, March 16 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
