FOOTBALL - Rugby Town suffer heavy home defeat against Spalding

RUGBY Town have now conceded 11 goals in their last two matches after suffering a 5-1 home defeat against Spalding United.

Despite Mikey Taylor drawing Valley level on 10 minutes, Spalding scored four first-half goals to take the game out of the home side’s reach at Butlin Road.

The result means Rugby remain 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, two points above the relegation zone.

Spalding took the lead on six minutes when Paul Hathaway could only parry Riley O’Sullivan’s shot into the path of Jordan Graham who applied the finish.

Valley equalised four minutes later as Taylor produced a confident finish from David Kolodynski’s clever flick.

However, the visitors restored their lead on 22 minutes when O’Sullivan shrugged off his marker and fired a low shot into the net.

And O’Sullivan struck again four minutes later with a fine finish into the bottom corner to put Spalding in command.

The away side all but sealed the points five minutes before the break when Nathan Stainfield scored Splading’s fourth goal.

Valley should have reduced the deficit shortly after the restart only for Taylor to lift the ball over an empty goal after he rounded Spalding goalkeeper Tony Breeden.

More chances came and went for the home side in the second half as Breeden saved Barry Fitzharris’s crisp volley before Spalding substitute Kyle Barker completed the scoring from 20-yards on 83 minutes.

Rugby are next in action away at Hinckley Leicester Road on Saturday, March 23 with kick-off at 3pm at Leicester Road Stadium.
