FOOTBALL - Rugby Town surrender lead in Sporting Khalsa defeat

RUGBY Town surrendered an early lead in their first home game of the New Year as Valley suffered a 3-1 defeat against Sporting Khalsa.

Valley took the lead through Justice Campbell’s 16th minute goal only for Marvellous Onabirekhanlen to equalise for Khalsa just past the half-hour mark.

And Robbie Bunn completed the turnaround on the hour mark before Valley goalkeeper Tomasz Bukowski put through his own net shortly after at Butlin Road.

The result means Rugby have dropped back in to the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone, two points from safety with two games in-hand on the team above them.

Rugby broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Campbell latched onto Ryan Sahota’s through ball before finding the bottom corner with a fine finish.

However, Khalsa drew level on 32 minutes as debutant Onabirekhanlen pounced on Campbell’s loose touch to fire home from close range.

Sporting turned the game on its head on 60 minutes when Bunn rifled a low shot past Bukowski from the edge of the penalty area via the aid of a slight deflection.

And the visitors made sure of the points six minutes later when Dilano Reid’s effort from a tight angle went in off of the unfortunate Bukowski.

Rugby are next in action away at Spalding United on Tuesday, January 9 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.
