RUGBY Town suffered a 3-0 defeat against Wellingborough Town as Valley saw their winless run stretch to six matches.

Goals from Tyler Winters, George Barnell and Will Jones at Butlin Road condemned Rugby to a third straight league defeat.

The result means Valley sit seven points from safety in the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone.

After a slow start, former Rugby goalkeeper Ash Bodycote made a fine reaction save to keep out Harrison Nee’s close-range header.

However, the visitors broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Winters fired a powerful effort into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

And Wellingborough doubled their lead on 33 minutes as Barnell’s glanced effort from Danny Draper crept over the line before Rugby could clear the ball.

The visitors sealed the points on 65 minutes when substitute Jones slipped a shot past Paul Hathaway with his first two touches after coming off the bench.

Valley goalkeeper Hathaway then superbly denied Jones a second goal from a one-on-one situation following a slip from Tyreace Brown.

And Hathaway made another fine save late on to tip Draper’s shot onto the post.

Rugby are next in action against AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, February 8 with kick-off at 3pm at Hayden Road.
