SUBSTITUTES Jordan Wilson and David Kolodynski came off the bench to send Rugby Town top of the table with a 2-0 win against Wellingborough Town.
Wilson’s first goal for the club put Rugby ahead before Kolodynski settled the game in injury time to maintain Valley’s unbeaten start to the season at the Dog and Duck Ground.
Rugby sit top of the United Counties League Premier Division South table, two points clear of Newport Pagnell Town with a game in hand.
Valley’s Tom Fielding had an early shot saved before Luis Viera skimmed the post at the other end and Wellingborough captain Jack O’Connor headed over from a corner.
Madundo Semahimbo volleyed straight at Wellingborough goalkeeper Lewis Patching before he then fired wide with a snapshot after he burst into the penalty area.
Rugby continued to pressure the Wellingborough goal in the second period as Fielding waltzed past a pair of Town defenders before shooting over.
Despite Rugby being in control for much of the game, Wellingborough still carried a threat on the counter as Valley goalkeeper Matt Hill was well-placed to deal with Dan Porter’s strike.
The breakthrough finally came on 71 minutes when Wilson swept home Dan Summerfield’s low cross at the far post just moments after he was introduced from the bench.
However, Valley were forced to cling on to their lead as Alex Lock made a crucial goal line clearance following a scramble in the six-yard box.
And Wellingborough spurned a golden chance to equalise when Viera found himself clean through on goal only to shoot wide of the target.
Rugby sealed the win in added time when Kolodynski finished from close range from Wilson’s square ball after Summerfeld had missed with a curling shot moments earlier.
Valley are next in action at home to Histon on Saturday, October 15 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
