FOOTBALL - Valley back to winning ways at Rothwell Corinthians

MICHAEL Taylor’s first Rugby Town goal helped Valley return to winning ways with a 2-1 victory away at Rothwell Corinthians.

Taylor opened the scoring shortly before the break as Caine Elliott’s second-half penalty proved decisive after Rothewell reduced the deficit with a spot kick of their own late on at Sergeants Lawn.

The result means Rugby trail leaders Coventry Sphinx by seven points in the United Counties League Premier Division South table, with two games in hand.

Taylor opened his Valley account in style on 36 minutes as the striker beat two defenders before he fired into the net to leave the keeper with no chance.

And Rugby doubled their lead on 57 minutes when Elliott scored from the penalty spot after Tom Fielding was fouled in the box.

However, Rothwell set up a nervy finish when Lammin Jammeh scored a penalty of his own with 10 minutes left to play as Valley held on to secure their first win in four matches.

Rugby are next in action away at Godmanchester Rovers on Thursday, April 13 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the David Wilson Homes Ground.
