FOOTBALL - Valley beat Coventry to claim derby day spoils

Rugby Editorial 27th Sep, 2022   0

RUGBY Town scored twice in the opening five minutes to beat local rivals Coventry United 2-0 and move joint top of the table.

Caine Elliott opened the scoring after just two minutes before Madundo Semahimbo added a second goal just three minutes later as Valley made a blistering start to the derby clash at Butlin Road.

The result means Rugby are now joint top of the United Counties League Premier Division South table, level on points with Coventry Sphinx but with two games in hand.

And the game was just two minutes old when Elliott finished from David Kolodynski’s set up.

Rugby quickly added a second when Semahimbo was on hand to double Valley’s lead after Ryan Seal’s corner was headed back across goal.

Town are now the only unbeaten side remaining in the division this season, having won five and drawn one of their opening six matches.

Manager Carl Adams said: “Our first two away games were at most people’s pre-season picks for the top in Newport and Sphinx.

“The two after that will now be at teams who will possibly be up there challenging, based on results to-date, so it doesn’t get any easier.

“However we’ve made the start we aimed for and hopefully we can take the confidence that we’ve gained over the last two games in particular and keep the unbeaten run going for a while.”

Rugby are next in action away at March Town United on Saturday, October 1 with kick-off at 3pm at the GER Sports Ground.
