FOOTBALL - Valley hit Rothwell for seven

Rugby Editorial 22nd Sep, 2022   0

RUGBY Town responded to their FA Cup exit in style with a 7-0 midweek thrashing of Rothwell Corinthians – their biggest win in almost three years.

Valley were knocked out of the Cup in Second Round Qualifying last weekend after they were beaten 2-0 by Basford United who play two leagues above Rugby.

However, Rugby responded in devastating fashion with a 7-0 hammering of Rothwell in midweek as Ryan Seal started and completed the scoring with Madundo Semahimbo, Liam Francis, Caine Elliott, Thomas Fielding and Alex Lock also on target at Butlin Road.

Valley took the lead on 33 minuets when Seal made contact with Dan Summerfield’s driven cross before the ball span into the net off of Rothwell defender Connor Bird.

And that goal opened the floodgates as Rugby doubled their lead just five minutes later when Semahimbo finished off a fine team move from Elliott’s square ball.

The game was wrapped on 43 minutes when Francis rose highest to head home at the back post from Seal’s corner.

Rugby extended their lead on 69 minutes when Elliott powered the ball home from substitute Fielding’s cross.

And Valley’s new signing was on the scoresheet himself just a minute later as Fielding found the net via the aid of the woodwork with a well-struck effort from 20-yards out.

The home side made it six on 76 minutes when substitute Lock pounced on a loose ball in the box to score.

And the scoring was complete on 88 minutes when Seal grabbed his second of the game from the penalty spot after David Kolodynski was pulled back in the area.

Manager Carl Adams said: “It was an excellent performance from the lads tonight and in all reality with a bit more luck, we could have easily scored more.

“It’s certainly been a good start to the league campaign so far, but we know we’ll have to maintain these levels week in week out, if we’re to achieve our targets.”

Rugby are next in action at home to Coventry United on Saturday, September 24 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
