WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: PROMOTION is the aim for table toppers Warwickshire Bears Women’s team after they recorded four consecutive wins over a busy weekend to go top of the Women’s League Division 3a.

The Bears had only seven registered players for the second round of matches in the women’s league as they travelled to the Nottingham Wildcats Arena to take on Angels of the North 3, the Eastern Blue Stars and Stoke Spitfires.

First up for the Bears was a difficult match against Angels of the North on Saturday and it proved to be a very close match with just five points separating the two sides.

The Angels fought hard and won the second quarter while also tying the match in both the third and the fourth but it was the Bears who snatched a narrow 14-19 win.

On the same day the Bears were in action against to take on Eastern Blue Stars for the first time this season.

There was only one basket between them by the end of the opening quarter but in the second the Bears took control of the match, winning 12-1 and they held a 18-5 lead at the mid-way point.

Two close quarters followed but the Bears held onto their lead to record a second consecutive in thanks to a 28-19 scoreline.

With very little time to rest the Bears were back in action on Sunday as they took on the Eastern Blues Stars again who this time around were looking for revenge.

It proved to be much tighter affair this time around but it was the Bears who were victorious again and they stole another win by just one basket.

Robinson’s side were looking to extend their winning streak to four matches in their final match of the weekend against a weakened Stoke Spitfire outfit who were only able to field five players due to unavailability and injuries.

The Bears were always in control of the game against the plucky Spitfires, and used their squad effectively to run out comfortable 26-12 winners and finish the weekend on a high.

Bears coach Robinson commented: “It was a long weekend of physical basketball, the girls started slow but got better as the weekend went on with all players getting on the scoresheet for the weekend.

“Overall very happy to be on top of the table going in to the 3rd weekend with our eyes on promotion.”
