THE FIRST half of the Midland League Premier Division season ended badly for Rugby & East Warwickshire after they fell to a 6-2 defeat at Nottingham University.

Despite being level 1-1 at half-time thanks to a first half strike by Szymon Oszyjczyk and taking a 2-1 lead shortly after the break through Lukas Lakin, the visitors were undone in the second period.

The Students produced a number of chances and Rugby had no further reply.

At the Christmas break Rugby finish second from bottom but will be hoping to return to the form of previous seasons when they return to league action on the January 16.

Elsewhere, the second team draw 3-3 against Leek while the third team drew 2-2 with fourth-placed Nottingham University.

The students enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half and took a 2-0 lead, but after the break Rugby showed plenty of character to fight back and claim a point.

The club’s fourth team lost 3-1 away at Beeston while the fifth team lost 5-1 to the same side and Rugby’s sixth-string outfit drew 3-3 at home to Leicester.

Rugby’s ladies side saw their 100 per cent winning started to the season come to an end after they were held 1-1 away at Hampton.

The ladies had won their opening nine matches but they were held by a tough Hampton side on Saturday.

There was better news for the third team who came away from Old Silhilians with a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a great goal by Julia Bower.

And goals by ‘Paddy’ and ‘Beno’ in the last ten minutes saw Rugby’s Under-14s claim a 2-0 win over Sutton Coldfield.
