WARWICKSHIRE began their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign with a comfortable seven-wicket victory against Essex.
The Bears produced an outstanding batting display at the County Ground as Ed Barnard (173 not out) powered the visitors to victory with more than two overs to spare.
Barnard hit 21 boundaries (17 fours and four sixes) on his way to 173 from just 140 deliveries supported by Michael Burgess (59 not out), Rob Yates (42) and Will Rhodes (41) as the Bears reached 328-3 in 47.4 overs.
Essex simply could not score runs at a quick enough rate after losing the toss and batting first. Opener Nick Browne (75) top scored while Charlie Allison (69) and Luc Benkenstein (44) chipped in with some useful runs.
However, Barnard (2-37) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby (3-69) impressed with the ball while Will Rhodes (1-16) and Craig Miles (1-66) also took a wicket apiece.
