James Sarjeant shines but Bees lose out to Swindon

JAMES Sarjeant admits he is starting to feel more confident riding the tight turns of the Arena-Essex Raceway as a patched-up Coventry Bees side experienced a night to forget at Lakeside, writes Observer speedway reporter Robin Allen.

A depleted Bees suffered a 57-35 defeat having been without the services of number one rider Krzysztof Kasprzak who was racing in Russia at the latest Speedway European Championship, while Kacper Woryna and Josh Bates missed out through injury and illness.

Without star man Kasprzak and with no facility permitted to cover his absence, Gary Havelock’s side recorded just three race wins and lacked firepower.

Two of those victories came courtesy of reserve James Sarjeant, who took the chequered flag in heats two and 12 – and he was pleased with a positive individual performance.

“The track was hard I was unlucky in a few and I could have come away with a few more points,” said Sarjeant “It’s the best I’ve ridden here though so. At least I can come here next year and be a lot more confident and enjoy my racing.

“We have had a few problems with bikes over the last month, Me and Enz have been trying to put bikes together and when stuff has not been going our way we had to just keep going. When you get some points though, it is rewarding.”

Jason Garrity top scored for the visitors with 11 points, including a second place finish behind the unbeaten Edward Kennett as he took Coventry’s tactical ride in heat nine.

British Champion Danny King delivered their third race win as he triumphed in the penultimate race having endured a mixed evening.

But skipper Chris Harris and guesting number-one Robert Branford struggled in the heat-leader positions on a difficult night.
