Junior football club on the lookout for female players to join latest team

FOOTBALL: RUGBY’S longest running junior football club are on the lookout for female players to join its first ever girls team.

Hillmorton Football Club plan to compete in an Under 13s league next season having never fielded a women’s team before.

But club chairman Ian Grimsley requires more youngsters to come forward and take part in coaching sessions.

The club so far has attracted just four girls to play – and another six are needed if the team is to enter next year’s league.

With women’s football seemingly at an all time high, on the back of a FA Cup Final watched by more than 35,000 at Wembley, Ian is hoping improved publicity in the sport can help attract new members to his latest team.

He said: “We are Rugby’s longest established junior football club, but we’ve never had a girls team.

“We have four players at the moment but we need six more if we are to compete next season and it will soon be the stage where we have to send off an application to compete.

“Football is a wonderful sport and allows youngsters to make new friends, be part of a team, and compete at a competitive level.

“Girls don’t need any experience in football, so long as they’re sporty or would like to come and try it then I’m sure they will enjoy themselves.

“We have female players for Leicester City and West Brom who are keen to help out on the coaching side of things so it’s a great opportunity.”
