FOOTBALL: LUTTERWORTH Town took a giant leap towards Championship glory last Saturday as they beat Sileby Town 3-1 on Saturday.

A glorious afternoon and a fantastic pitch was the scene as Sileby Town, who had previously won their last five games but they came up against a tough challenge in the shape of the league leaders.

Both teams started brightly and managed to create opportunities, with the best falling for Lutterworth’s Tendai Daire who pulled his effort wide of the target after finding space 18 yards out, while Kristian Bee made a smart save at the other end.

The game was hotly contested, several players found their names taken by the referee, as neither side gave anything away.

On the half-hour mark the deadlock was broken when a high pass over the top of the full-back saw Joe Herbert win the race and lift the ball over the stranded keeper to give the Swifts a lead 1-0 at half-time.

The second half continued in a similar vein as the first but the visitors were given a boost when a rash tackled led to a midfielder being shown a sending off for a second yellow card to reduce the hosts down to ten men.

Lutterworth pressed Sileby and an expertly delivered Marshal Keenan corner kick found the head of top marksman Tendai Daire, who made no mistake in doubling the Swifts’ lead.

The Swifts then made the changes with Rhys Roberts being replaced by Jordan Small and Ben Tye was on for Louis Samuels.

Lutterworth then made it three after man of the match Joe Herbert turned on the after burners to race past the right back, to then slide the ball beyond the goalkeeper and allow Daire to tap in to the empty net, for his second of the match.

Jordan Small then came close to making it four, but for a fine save by the Sileby keeper.

Sileby then managed to find a consolation at the other end when their substitute broke away from his marker and nodded home from a corner.

But it was too little, too late as the game concluded and Sileby missed their opportunity to close the gap on Lutterworth, who continue their unbeaten run and domination of the league.
