FOOTBALL: LUTTERWORTH claimed top spot in the Leicestershire Senior League thanks to a convincing 6-1 victory over Coalville Town’s development squad.

Lutterworth started the game on the front foot and from the outset it was clear that Coalville had a job on their hands on Saturday afternoon. Coalville were able to mount counter attacks but lacked the incisive final ball as Lutterworth’s defenders held firm.

Mid-way through the first half Tendai Daire gave the home side the lead after some good Lutterworth interplay but the heavy pitch seemed to dictate a lot of the pace of play and, at times, seemed to slow Lutterworth’s momentum.

Coalville took full advantage of this and after winning a corner they found themselves level just before the break. Lutterworth were unable to clear the danger after the initial header was cleared off the line and the ball was smashed into the bottom corner.

Lutterworth had a point to prove after the break and a slight shift in formation almost led to a second goal after some excellent work by Marshall Keen allowed Louis Samuels to square the ball across goal to Anthony Roberts whose touch slid the ball just wide.

The Swifts did manage to get their noses back in front after an out swinging corner was knocked down and fell to skipper Kade Lewis, who calmly slotted the ball through the eye of a needle.

Lutterworth were completely dominant now and Coalville were unable to cope with the multitude of threats from all over the pitch. Good work down the left and a dangerous cross once again saw Jordan Small blocking a clearance and finding the net to make it three.

A beautifully whipped Mark Warren free kick then found the head of Tendai Daire, who made no mistake in directing the ball high and out of reach of the stranded keeper to make it 4-1.

The Swifts then rang the changes with Liam Taylor, Ben Tye and Shaun Leslie all being introduced as Lutterworth continued to take the game to Coalville.

Marshall Keenan’s mesmeric footwork tied the Coalville defence into knots and allowed Louis Samuels to smash home Towns fifth and keep all three points in Dunley Way.

But that was not the end as Luke Shaw still found time to try his luck from distance. He let fly from the right side of midfield and watched his effort rise high and over the keeper to make it six to round off an outstanding performance.

This Saturday Lutterworth are away to Allexton and New Parks.
