CRESCENT School’s Olivia Monk took home a gold medal from the Independent School Association’s National Track and Field Athletics Championships.

The Year 6 pupil raced in the 80m sprint event, hosted at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, and was joined by Year 5 pupil George Bell in representing the school at the finals.

Monk won the race in a photo finish, crossing the line in 11.32 seconds to stand highest on the podium.

Meanwhile, Bell impressed with a personal best 3.85m jump, enough to rank him fourth in the long jump event, followed up by a 1:57.58 time in the 600m race to finish sixth.

Rachel McCollin, head of girls games at the school, said the results from the pair were just rewards for their efforts.

“We always tell the children to believe in themselves and push beyond their own boundaries, and they certainly did that,” she said.

“It was such a fantastic day, a well-run event and the children were simply incredible.

“We are delighted for Olivia and George – a gold medal and a personal best, it was a super result.”
