Paine-ful end as Town draw away

Chalfont St Peter 2 Rugby Town 2

TOWN let slip a much needed win by conceding an equaliser at the death, having initially themselves recovered from a goal deficit at Mill Meadow.

Rugby made two changes to their starting line-up from the midweek cup win at Chasetown, with Nick Bennion returning in goal and Ben George replacing the unavailable Craig Kelly.

The visitors put in a particularly poor first half display, and really only imposed themselves on the game with the introduction of substitutes Seb Lake-Gaskin and Kyle Bishop on the hour mark – with both players finding the net ahead of the 95th minute Chalfont equaliser from Alex Paine.

Connor Hayes and Paine both struck the post for the home side in an opening period which saw Town fail to register a single shot on target, with a wayward effort from Sam Youngs shortly before the interval representing a rare attacking highlight for them.

The early exchanges of the second half were uneventful, but it came as no surprise when the Saints took the lead in the 54th minute with the unmarked Gareth Paxton heading an Alan Hedley corner past Bennion at close quarters.

Lake-Gaskin and Bishop gave Rugby the required impetus though, and Town were soon level when the two combined well with Lake-Gaskin’s pass finding Bishop, whose pace took him past two defenders before firing past Mike McEntegart.

Lake-Gaskin put one effort one wide of the target shortly before he grabbed Town’s second with a rising strike from the edge of the area on 76 minutes after good work out wide from David Kolodynski.

The hosts refused to give up on the match though, and Danilson Vicente tested Bennion from distance, before the late drama unfolded.

With the game already beyond its regulation ninety minutes, Bennion appeared to take a nasty knock on his back and having chosen to see out the closing moments, he may have lacked the necessary mobility to deal with a Remmel Clarke cross into the box – which was subsequently scrambled over the line by Paine.
