Proud Ansell earns her first international win in Paris

BOXING: MORGAN Ansell revealed how proud she felt when singing the national anthem after returning from a bumper weekend schedule with England in Paris.

Representing England at 48kg – the competition’s lightest weight – the teenager fought twice in the French capital, winning her first bout and losing the second.

Despite the 50/50 record, Ansell flew home full of confidence and determined to build on her first international boxing experience.

With the Youth Olympics looming, the Rugby-based fighter is working harder than ever in the gym while continuing with her studies at Rugby High.

Speaking to The Observer after returning from France, Ansell said she was extremely proud to represent England against France.

She said: “I couldn’t contain my excitement in the build up to the fight.

“When I got to the airport I was very proud. It was like I’d already won because I was handed the chance to box for England and I’m aware very few get that chance.

“It was an honour to wear my England kit and have coaches Mick Driscoll and Amanda Coulson in my corner.

“The highlight was signing the national anthem, that was when it all turned real for me.”

Though a few nerves kicked in before her first fight, Ansell displayed great signs of composure to win her opening bout.

However she lost her fight in Sunday despite feeling as though she’d done enough to win. But she took the result on the chin and said it’s all part of her learning experience.

“Before my bouts all the coaching I received in the build up to the fight from Edwin (Cleary) and the England coaches was racing through my head,” said Ansell.

“I boxed at a high tempo and gave the girl no rest once I realised my fitness was much better than hers thanks to my preparation and personal training.

“I kept on her for all three rounds of both bouts in multiple phase attacks.

“Edwin and my dad will support me when I say those two bouts were the best two bouts I have ever boxed and I really put on a show.

“The loss is part of international boxing.

“I was straight back in the gym on Monday as training resumed ahead of the NABCs in a few weeks.”
