Relegation threatened Welsh thumped by Alcester

RUGBY Welsh found themselves on the receiving end of a 52-10 thumping at home to Alcester in the Midlands 5 West (South) division.

But the final scoreline gives little indication of the effort Welsh put in against promotion challenging Alcester.

The hosts competed well throughout but were undone by a quick Alcester backline who took control of proceedings in the final 15 minutes.

Alcester were ahead in the opening minute thanks to an unconverted try and it became apparent that they would look to run the ball from every part of the pitch.

This led to their second try which was a breakaway effort from inside their own 22 and the signs looked ominous for Welsh but they responded well and began to take the game to their opposition.

Welsh narrowed the gap thanks to an Angus Wilson penalty and despite an injury to Robin Corrigan they were still well in the contest at half time.

After the break the hosts continued to put up a brave fight and their forwards played some of their most abrasive rugby of the season.

Their efforts were rewarded when they deservedly narrowed the gap when Jamie Cranham took a quick penalty and burst through a couple of tackles before passing to Andy Higham who crashed over and Wilson converted the extras.

But injuries forced a re-shuffle and Alcester scored two quick-fire tries to take a 24-10 lead.

The home side responded well and were camped in the opposition 22 for five minutes but they were unable to score a third try as the visitors kept their line intact and this proved to be the final Welsh opportunity.

The game was turned on its head in the final 15 minutes as the Welsh effort took its toll and further injuries affected the team.

Alcester took full advantage and scored four converted tries to show why they are seeking promotion.
